Modern Medieval

Leather, spikes, studs, and furs, this season marks a trend toward the primitive and the visceral. Watch for nods to ‘80s Glamazons, and ‘70s groupies, along with an homage to the swagger and sneer of punk rock. On the big screen, both The Hobbit and Star Trek will be battling for the box office. On television, shows like the post-apocalyptic Revolution and the sword and sorcery hit Game of Thrones mark a move toward looking to the past, and the far future, for inspiration.

Take a look at the recent runways and you’ll see designers pushing boundaries with an array of slyly futuristic styles. Fresh, unexpected new collections - from Valentino’s gothic chic, to Pamela Love's fantastically futurist jewelry, to Proenza Schouler’s Middle Earth furs - embrace an aesthetic that simultaneously recalls Sid Vicious, 2001: A Space Odyssey and the knights of King Arthur court.

The result is a season marked by a thrilling mix of strong lines and luxuriously fabrics, a Modern Medieval style that is both fun and fearless, defiance - imbued with a touch of wry humor.

Just One Eye explores the many ways to go Modern Medieval.

Heavy Metals:
Lebanese designer Noor Fares goes modern and minimal with her architecture-inspired gold “Pipe” rings.

Up and comer Kirat Young designs beautifully bold cuffs, some simple strips of shimmering gold, others, intricately detailed, calling to mind Indian courtesans or colorful caravans.

The newly revamped Paco Rabanne offers up looks culled from the innovative artist’s legendary chainmail and disc link designs. Look out for metallic wonders reminiscent of the whimsically sensuous looks Rabanne created for the enduring cult classic Barbarella.

Sleek Spikes:
NYC-based design Pamela Love created cosmic wonders with her powerfully spiked pieces, and her vivid crystal-detailed cuffs, necklaces and rings.

Renowned Parisian jewelry house Porchet (hailed for their pearls) defies tradition with hoop earrings embellished with deliciously vicious spikes and vibrant rubies.

Fabulous Furs:
This season, Proenza Schouler worked gorgeous fur and leather detailing into their signature handbag collection.

Californians Co explore a range of vibrant color and shapes with their incredible fur creations.

Gothic Glamour:
Established houses like Valentino continue to keep on trend by sidestepping convention. Their new Noir collection embraces luxurious black leathers and brilliant silver studs – a fresh take on the rock Goth noir of bands like Bauhaus and Siouxie and the Banshees.
