This 1960's chair was made by Zanine Caldas and has made its way here to Los Angeles.
Zanine Caldas was born in Belmonte, Bahia, in 1919. Self-taught, he began his professional career with a workshop in Rio de Janeiro, which provided models for modern architects from the 1940s and 1950s. The study on plywood, the model-making skills, was decisive for the opening of the Móveis Artísticos Z (Artistic Furniture Z), in the interior of São Paulo, in 1949 which produced, on a semi-industrial scale, pieces for the middle class. Zanine lived in Brasilia, where he was a teacher and worked with popular housing in vernacular materials, and in Rio de Janeiro, which concentrates most of his architectural work, mainly houses in which he uses the reclaimed wood. He returned to Bahia in the 1970s, to the coastal village of Nova Viçosa, where he started to create furniture of organic traces. He made furniture and architecture projects until the early 1990s. He died in 2001, in Vitória, Espírito Santo.
